Hallelujah Rewrite for ASM Vigils
Music: Leonard Cohen · Lyrics: Sarah Hewson
We see your face, we hear your cry
The hope is we can unify
We won’t give up, you will not be forgotten
We’ll tell your story, project your voice
Gain freedom for all and we’ll rejoice
But, wish you could feel that Hallelujah
Hallelujah, Hallelujah, Hallelujah, Hallelu-u-u-u-jah
Our offer here is not enough
Weaving through the screams, a voice of love
A tiny flame in the wind and darkness
On the scent of despair, a dusting of hope
That one day we finally throw you a rope
Sanctuary leads to Hallelujah
Hallelujah, Hallelujah, Hallelujah, Hallelu-u-u-u-jah
We recognize your life and worth
Your strength and beauty upon your birth
You will not walk to death alone and silenced
Liberation is coming, we’ll open their eyes
And show them how justice will be our prize
Our lives are one, we all need hallelujah
Hallelujah, Hallelujah, Hallelujah, Hallelu-u-u-u-jah
I can still feel the heat as you arrived
In blood and waste you were confined
You still reached out to greet me face-to-face
Vibrations of peace were all I could give
A promise to remember that you had lived
A soothing melody of hallelujah
Hallelujah, Hallelujah, Hallelujah, Hallelu-u-u-u-jah
We’re haunted by the pain of your mother
Solemn acceptance in your brother
Sneezing, coughing, crying just like us
We watched you try to break the chain
Many are watching, feeling that pain
Peace and change are coming, hallelujah
Hallelujah, Hallelujah, Hallelujah, Hallelu-u-u-u-jah
We’re bringing love to Hell on Earth
Our early compassion had a rebirth
We’ll find this here inside of every human
We’ll apply the lessons of history
The cages will open, we’ll all be free
Our movement is truth, our goal is possible
Hallelujah, Hallelujah, Hallelujah, Hallelu-u-u-u-jah
