Courage, My Friend

According to The Sunrise Movement, this song was written by a white songwriter about Black South African prisoners under Apartheid, inspired by prisoners about to be executed, singing to one another on death row. The Sunrise Movement has removed it from their songbook to avoid it being used insensitively.
This song remains in the Animal Liberation Songbook to preserve its use in reference to matters of life and death, but I ask that you confine it to that use. The word “activists” has been removed, and I ask that you not insert activists’ names, but instead keep this song focused on animals themselves, and imagine each word being offered as comfort to someone facing either slaughter or rescue.
